Since Lauren's cast came off in March, she's been unable to move her ankle. She's been walking on her heel and curling her toes down, so much so that after a bit of walking she'll say "owie toes". When we first voiced our concerns to Dr. Standard he said that it wasn't uncommon for it to take a while for movement after having the foot held in one position by a fixator and cast. After several weeks and no signs of improvement we talked to Dr. Standard's staff and they recommended that we come for a check-up. So, after a nice time visiting with family in Ohio, we traveled on to Baltimore. Grandma Sandy accompanied Lauren and I, while Daddy and Grandpa Dan headed home for the work week.
Dr. Standard examined Lauren's ankle. He said that he thought a tendon which runs down the front of the ankle tightened up during the immobilization and was keeping her from being able to move her foot downwards. He suggested that we start trying to resolve the problem by taking Lauren to physical therapy for twelve weeks to see if we could lenghthen that tendon. We were relieved to hear that Dr. S was not recommending more surgery at this time, and in fact he said surgery would be our last resort.
