An email Steve sent out in regards to our appointment with the genetics team:
Not sure if you knew, but Lauren went to see a genetics doc today. This was to give us an idea of whether or not we would be risking future children or even if this had anything to do with one of us. Long story short, they don't think it is related to genetics. They can't say for sure, but it's possible that it had something to do with the twin we lost. They say it could have been a blood flow problem, thus causing the leg, etc. to under develop. They said if it was genetic, we would probably see problems with both sides, arms, and with possible learning/developmental issues as well. They say she looks great (like we didn't already know that!).
She is 18 lbs.! That puts her, in the specialists words, "off the charts." They showed us a growth chart, and Lauren is in the top 97th percentile in weight. Height and head are 50-60 percentile, if I remember correctly. Doc mentioned her double chin. I was thinking to myself, that IS genetic.
They said on several occasions that she is getting more than enough calories. Doc even said to "take it easy on the groceries". Heather and I say if she wants it, we will give it to her. We will worry about her weight when she starts eating real food or walking. My gut tells me that the more calories she gets now, maybe the more her right leg will grow!!! Just her dad thinking he is doing everything he can to help it grow anyway. Our pediatrician said not to worry about her weight right now, and I'm sure Lauren is happy to know that she can eat as much milk as she wants!
